Skype Plug-in Causes Firefox Tab Refresh

Refreshing Web pages without user wanting it may cause serious trouble. Imagine that you pay for something twice or thrice, or send someone twice as much money than he or she asked from you. Anyway, constant undesired refreshing of tab content is irritating and really gets on users' nerve.

All Skype users who agree to install its Firefox add-on seem to experience the same trouble: when there are several opened tabs, clicking on an inactive tab to bring it to the foreground causes its contents to refresh. What's worse, Skype add-on gets installed by itself without asking, so there is only two ways of getting rid of it: either disable it or uninstall it.

Unfortunately, it is not the only add-on that poses a security threat, please see Problematic extensions on Mozilla Web site for more information of extensions that cause Firefox incorrect behavior.

Generally, if you have a similar problem here are some guidelines to follow.

  • Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing it (use the Default Theme).
  • If it does work in Safe-mode, disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
  • You have to close and restart Firefox after each change.

Also, Skype add-on is reported to break "level one" router control page. When viewed in Firefox it won't let users navigate through menus, instead it will only refresh the same page. The problem disappears after the add-on is uninstalled.

Currently we can confirm the problem with Skype version 3.8.0.115 add-on. Older versions did not tend to have the issue. Skype has not come up with the solution yet, so it is advisable to get rid of the add-on as quickly as possible after installing Skype.
